XMGFree and XMGNetworks Changes

Hey everyone! I have a few things to blog about today, so I figure I’ll just jump right into it.

No more school! Yep, I have no more school until September. This means I will be up later and I’ll be putting more time into Opera, XMG, and TMR.

Yes, I know TMR’s going rather slowly. This is because I haven’t talked to either of the other DJs: Eric S. and Casey S. Both of them are now DJs on Novastream so they will probably have their hands tied up with that for a while. Hopefully things will pick up in a while, I don’t want to have to abandon this project, and I probably won’t. I want to go join Novastream also, but I can’t since I’m on Linux and they use this request application thing that requires Winblows. Maybe I can run it in WINE…

If you visit XMGFree regularly, you might notice some changes. The main thing right now is that the forum is being centralized. Members will keep their accounts and no posts will be lost, but last night and today we moved the forum and did some modifications to the skin, such as new logo images and such. The old XMGFree forum is now the XMGNetworks forum. We’re not exactly sure how this will work, but it should hopefully work out well.

Well, that’s it! Keep in mind that this site is ALWAYS run on the latest Wordpress from Subversion, and it’s highly experimental, so if you encounter any problems, let me know via the email form. Thanks!

Oh yeah!

New More-Smilies Smilie Package

Alright, I was testing out a new package for the more-smilies wordpress plugin, and I’m quite pleased with it. You can get it here. You might recognise these smilies from the Jimmac smilie set for GAIM. They are the same smilies. They’re also the smilies I use here. :-) :-( :-P :-D 8-|) :-* =-O etc…
[edit: I updated the package quickly, I added : - * without the spaces to do :-* since :-" didn't like to work for some reason. I think it has something to do with Wordpress making the fancy quotes.]
[edit: I updated the package again since it was causing... issues.]

Just checked IEBlog

I haven’t been keeping up with the latest Internet Explorer news… Apparently, IE7 is going to have this feature called “Low-Rights IE”. It’s built on Longhorn, so it’s only going to be available on Longhorn. Anyway, it seems that MS is taking yet another thing from Linux and calling it their own. Right now, most Windows users run as.. well.. the Windows equivelant of what running as root is on Linux. Anyone who uses Linux knows that running as root is a dumb idea, because one little mistake could mutilate the system. Anyway, Longhorn and IE7 for Longhorn is apparently going to make it easier to run as a regular user. I don’t know, don’t ask me, ask the guy who posted about it on IEBlog. I don’t get how this will work though. They say they’re making it easier for people to run as a regular user, as opposed to an administrator. Will this allow, for instance, users to install a program in their user directory? If they do that, then the virii/worms/spyware/trojans should only affect things owned by the user, or that the user has access to. It would sort of quarrentine it. Now, this may not be that effective. Most users like to have access to their important documents without having to log in as another user, so they will probably store them in their own user’s files or whatever MS sets up. Probably ‘My Documents’. Anyhow, the malicious software may not be able to do anything to Windows itself, but it can still get whatever information the user is storing, and send it back to the software’s creator to use for whatever he or she wants to use it for. Sure, the same thing could happen on Linux or Mac or whatever, but still. Knowing MS, there will still be holes in Windows that will allow programs to sabotage the system. Besides, I highly doubt many users will use this feature, with all the hassle it would give them when installing programs that they want everyone to be able to access.

I think it’s time…

Hello everybody. I’ve been working a lot lately, but I’m sorry I didn’t blog more recently. I’m just gonna jump right into this, so here goes nothing….

Lately I’ve been really disappointed with modern HTML help sites. They seem to promote non-standard code, crappy javascript, and usually they don’t teach you a thing about HTML or XHTML, so I think it’s time for a real HTML help site. I highly doubt it’ll get as many visitors, but why not? It’ll be like w3schools, but focused more towards the average idiot on the internet. Hopefully it’ll be as successful as the original Suppliers. I plan on starting it sometime this summer, but I don’t know. If anyone is very experienced with XHTML and CSS, feel free to email me if you would like to help.

Speaking of projects, remember the “Get The Facts” thing? Well, I’ve gotten everyone I need, and this summer I will be working on additional content. If you want to help me with that, let me know, also. If you still want to send in your testimonial, go ahead also.

About the new font… I absolutely loved my old title font, and I had nothing against it. I’d still be using it now if Corey hadn’t stolen it. Heh, It’s not like I made the font or anything, I just don’t want people thinking I saw his site and liked the font and used it here. It gets messy, you know? Anyway, I like this new font, so whatever.

Sorry for such a short blog today, I’m not really in the mood. I’ll hopefully post again tomorrow. Later!
